Periodontosis

Periodontosis

Take the word periodontosis as an example. In medical terms, the ending “-itis” describes an inflammatory condition, whereas “-osis” refers to a metabolic, degenerative disorder. For example, arthrosis is the term given to the degeneration of a joint. This may be due to improper joint stress, metabolic disorders developing in the cartilage, resulting in the deterioration of the cartilage. On the other hand, arthritis refers to the inflammation of a joint eg. as a consequence of bacterial contamination of a wound from an accident. This is not just a play on words; an inflammation calls for very different treatment than that for a degenerative disorder. Therefore, it is important to note, a correct diagnosis is the starting point for the correct and most efficient treatment. Henceforth, if your dental practitioner tells you that you are suffering from periodontosis, you should know that you are not talking to the right dentist! You can find more information on this subject of periodontitis in our dental forum and blog, as well as the dental video with the same title!
